Bradford's first woman bus driver since the 1939-45 war has achieved her ambition. Mrs Rita Byrne, 46, of Girlington, Bradford, who passed her PSV driving test last Friday, said yesterday: "I am very happy indeed. I've wanted to be a driver all my life." Rita has been a conductress for 21 years, the last three in Bradford. She should start driving buses in about a week.

Once a year the Bradford Grammar School deserts its fine new building in Frizinghall and assembles at the old school - now Carlton Grammar School - in Manor Row to march in procession to Bradford Cathedral for the Founders' Day commemoration. More than 1,000 boys, masters in cap and gown and governors attended the service which was conducted by the Provost of Bradford, the Very Rev. John G Tiarks.
